Teriyaki term

Donburi

Donburi ("bowl") is Japanese rice-bowl comfort food — a bowl of steaming rice topped with a savory main and its sauce. It's fast, filling, everyday cooking, and every topping gets its own -don name.

Donburi — Teriyaki

A bowl for everything

Gyudon (simmered beef), katsudon (pork cutlet and egg), oyakodon (chicken and egg — the name means "parent and child"), tendon (tempura) and unadon (eel) are all donburi. The rice soaks up the sauce, which is the whole idea.

The workhorse meal

Donburi is the Japanese equivalent of a great one-bowl lunch — quick, satisfying and deeply woven into daily life, from train-station stands to home kitchens.

Insider tip. Order oyakodon if you've never had it — chicken and softly set egg over rice is Japanese home cooking at its most comforting.
